OUCH! Delete my NTFS (C: or untitled) partition. install Ubuntu in a logical drive. The only reason I reffered to the MBR as system is because that was what Macrium called it.

When I run Recovery Manager console it keeps searching for external USB for ages. When I made it into a drive letter, I could see that it had a "boot" folder, a "System volume" folder, and a bootmgr file.

But it's not HP trying to screw you over, it's windows trying to screw you over. You can even install Windows in this manner, if you do the partition layout before installing Windows. C drive is user partition for OS & personal data.
