Well, I stopped it and it seemed to be o.k. From the Command Prompt, type the command “chkdsk” followed by a space, then the letter of the drive you wish to examine or repair. My laptop came with an SSD and I'm not sure if there are any negative implications to running chkdsk on such a drive. As for other tools that could give you some insight, I like Seagate's SeaTools utility (which works on drives from all manufacturers). Again, I don't know how you could do figure out what file went across that sector. I can't answer your questions with the level of detail you might like, but here are some brief answers. 1.

at least i now use a 1TB drive so i only have to do this maybe once a year.
